BRING IT ON
Lions and tigers and bears . . . Chewbacca’s iconic voice was crafted from a blend of sounds recorded from walruses, lions, camels, bears, rabbits, tigers, and badgers. Nicknamed "Chewie" (but only called that by his friends) the character was portrayed by Peter Mayhew, who stood at an impressive 7’3″. Mayhew was chosen for the role primarily because of his height. The creation of Chewie was inspired by George Lucas’s dog, who would sit upright in the passenger seat of his car. Chewie played a crucial role in helping Jedi Master Yoda escape during the assault on his planet. Though not mentioned in the films, Chewie has retractable claws used for climbing, which he considers dishonorable to use in combat. Often hidden by his fur, Chewie’s eyes are actually blue. He met his end at the age of 225 on the planet Sernpidal.**

Chewie is one of the most beloved of the Star Wars characters, with thousands of people dressing up like him for Comicons every year - some even doing quite an impressive vocal impersonation, even without the animals.
